Best Whole House Water Filter For Well Water(2020 Reviews)

Many homes get their water from a private well instead of from the city’s water line. Well water is not always 100% pure because the ground itself can be contaminated. To solve this problem, you need a water filter.

After lots of research and combing through different products and their pros and cons, we feel that the best whole house water filter for well water is the SpringWell Whole House Water Filter.

In case you’d like to keep your options open, though, we’ve shortlisted 5 very high quality and reliable whole house filters for your consideration.

3. Iron/Manganese Whole House Water Filter From Pelican Water Systems

No products found.

One of the more advanced water filtration systems for your home is the Iron/Manganese Whole House Water Filter from Pelican Water Systems. The system filters water in five stages, which will be elaborated upon below.

This multi-stage water filter is an excellent choice for large houses that have 4 to 6 bathrooms as it is capable of filtering enough water to supply them all at once. Many large houses have their own private wells, which is why we’ve chosen this one in our list.

The first stage of the Pelican Water Systems Filter is a 5-Micron sediment filter; this stage of the filtration makes the water safe for your filter as well as home appliances by removing sediment; this may include dirt or debris.

Dirt and debris can have a devastating influence on your appliances and your filters, but also on your plumbing. In fact, sediment in water can clog your faucets and even influence the taste of the water.

Once sediment has been removed from the water in the first stage, the water goes through Pelican chlorination . During this second stage of the filtration process, a special concentrate is mixed with water.

The third stage of the filtration system is the Greensand Plus Iron Removal. During this stage, the water goes through a special filtering process where the iron is removed.

Once the third stage is complete, the water continues to the carbon filtration system; this is the stage where a lot of harmful substances are removed. During carbon filtration stage, compounds such as chlorine, sediment, odors, and unwanted tastes are all removed from the water.

The final stage of the Iron/Manganese Whole House Water Filter is the salt-free water softening stage. During this final stage, the NaturSoft system will remove hardness minerals from the water, subsequently turning hard water into soft water. Therefore, this kind of system is perfect for your shower or bathroom.

Pros

  • Very effective at removing iron
  • No electricity required
  • It has 5 stages

How Do I Find the Best Whole House Water Filtration System for well water?

As you may have noticed by looking at the examples above, there are various features you can encounter with water filtration systems. So, how do you choose the best features for your home? Below, we have provided an overview of the essential technologies you should consider for your well water filtration system.

Water softening

One of the essential filtration technologies for many homeowners is water softening technology; this is a process where hard water is turned into soft water. Hard water contains high levels of calcium and magnesium, which in turn could influence your skin and hair after having a shower. Through ion exchange technology, water filters can turn hard water into soft water.

Reverse Osmosis

Another technology a lot of people look at is the reverse osmosis technology. Reverse osmosis is achieved through the use of mechanical filters, which in turn removes harmful sediments from water.

We must mention that not all reverse osmosis filtration systems are made the same. Some provide the basic functionality of sediment removal, while others contain additional filtration systems to remove certain toxic chemicals that could be present in water. Therefore, it is a good idea to check how advanced your reverse osmosis filtration system is.

Carbon filter

Homeowners should also look at filtration systems that contain a decent carbon filter. The carbon filter ensures the removal of harmful compounds such as chlorine, volatile organic chemicals or VOCs, benzene, and even radon. Because it removes such dangerous substances, it cannot be ignored for your water filtration system.

The final technology essential for your home is the so-called manganese and iron reduction filters. As the name suggests, this kind of filter removes iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide during the filtration process.

Are There Different Types Of Water Filtration Systems?

In the examples above, we focused on the whole house filtration systems for well water. Naturally, this is not the only kind of water filtration system available. Below, we have listed some of the most popular water filtration systems and technologies with their respective benefits.

How much do water filtration systems cost?

Countertop water filters

Filtering water can be as simple as obtaining a countertop water filter; this can be done through a faucet mount or even a simple pitcher. Because of their rather compact size and less complex nature, these are the types of filters that are more affordable. Of course, we must mention that most countertop water filters will not filter the water to the extend of an advanced water filtration filter.

Under-sink water filters

In addition to the countertop water filtration systems, you can also encounter the so-called under-the-sink water purification systems; these are systems focused on the removal of toxins from water.

An under-the-sink purification system will require some degree of installation, as it filters the water before it comes out of the faucet. These kinds of filters can also have additional filters installed, improving their functionality. Therefore, it is not uncommon to find purification systems that filter out sediment and heavy minerals.

Within the range of under-the-sink purification systems, you will encounter the reverse osmosis purification system we mentioned earlier. Most reverse osmosis systems are aimed at the reduction of fluoride, nitrate, lead, and even copper.

Whole house water filters

Of course, the final type of water filter you can encounter is the whole home water purification system; this is a system that will filter water for various faucets and/or taps in your home simultaneously.

We must mention that a whole home water purification system can be quite complex, so it should always be installed by a professional. The installation of the system must also consider the installation of the filter near the water meter and the installation near the well or water storage tank.

Most whole home water filtration systems will use the technology of mechanical straining to purify the water. During the mechanical straining process, the system will remove sediment and carbon.

Whole home water filtration systems can also contain so-called UV microbiological technology; this technology focusses on the removal of specific chemicals. A UV system can also turn hard water into soft water.

When selecting a whole home water filtration system for your home, you should always pick your system based on the toxins that are present in your water. If you are unaware of the toxins inside the water in your home, a good water toxin report will be required.

During the selection of your whole home water filtration system, you must also consider aspects such as the flow rate and the filter size. Naturally, the flow rate and filter size of your filtration system must be suitable for the size of your home and the water consumption of your household. To determine the optimal rate and size, you should also look at the consumption of popular appliances such as your washing machine.

Why Should I get a Whole Home Water Filtration System?

In the introduction of this article, we briefly mentioned some of the reasons why you should obtain a water filtration system for your entire home; this included environmental benefits as well as saving on your utility bill. Of course, there are health benefits associated with these water filtration systems as well, especially when you consider that toxins can make their way into your water.

This article has covered some of the basics of water filtration systems for the entire home, but also elaborated on some of the smaller water filtration systems and their benefits.

With the help of this article, you can make a more informed decision when you go shopping for your water filtration system. So, be sure to use this article as a reference whenever you are in doubt. We are sure you will get the perfect water filtration system at the end of it.

3. APEX Alkaline

Apex Countertop Drinking Water Filter, Alkaline, Clear (MR-1050)

The APEX Alkaline water filtration system is designed to offer a sophisticated, multi-stage filtration system without the installation of a complex, heavy or resource-intensive system. Unlike most filters, the APEX adds dissolved minerals back to the filtered water, which may prove a desirable option for persons who want flavorful water or are not satisfied with the taste put out by other filtration systems.

The core of the APEX is a large filtration column that takes up almost the entirety of the unit. This particular model, due to its clear sides, shows the filter in action, and also permits the user to visually observe if anything has gone wrong with the filter that necessitates its replacement.

A filter is a standardized unit that is produced by many companies, which increases availability and reduces long-term running costs. The filter needs to be replaced only once every 1500 gallons, making it more than suitable for most drinking water needs.

Installation is relatively easy and will not require tools in most cases. All necessary attachment hardware is included, and the sink is still available for unfiltered use for cleaning. All components have been certified and tested by the NSF, but the final product has not been tested, nor has it been evaluated for raw effectiveness regarding heavy mineral removal.

Therefore, it is not possible to say what percentage of heavy metals and other contaminants have been removed. However, the filtration system is similar in content and chemical action to most high-quality filters. So it should be more than adequate for removing basic contaminants and improving taste.

Indeed, the primary focus of the APEX is to improve taste, not to eliminate potentially harmful microbes and chemicals. However, it has the components necessary to do the latter in most cases. As such, while most taste-affecting chemicals and metals are removed, the pH is increased, and various alkaline metals are added, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium.

Such alkaline additions are common in many forms of bottled water or spring water and give it the unique flavour, although it may not be preferable for everyone. Additionally, these dissolved salts make the produced water suitable only for drinking. Application of the water to fish tanks or in devices intended for use only with distilled water can leave an undesirable residue or unwanted increases in pH.

This makes the APEX Alkaline suitable only for the production of drinking water where the normal tap has an unpleasant taste due to contaminants.

Pros

  • Alkaline water
  • Removes mercury and harmful pesticides
  • Fits on most kitchen faucets
  • Eco-friendly
  • Clear sides
  • Easy installation
  • Certified by NSF

Cons

  • Not easy to open the system for a filter replacement

The core of the WaterChef C7000 is a large central filter system, through which the water is passed through water pressure. Its large size and filtration capacity mean that it only needs to be replaced once every 1000 gallons, which equates to about once per year for most households.

This makes it more affordable in the long run than traditional tap-side options and filtration pitchers, which must be replaced several times per year to provide optimal filtration. While the WaterChef C7000 cartridges do cost more than such options, their longevity and low overall running cost make them a superior choice for families or heavy water users.

The WaterChef C7000 has been certified by the NSF to remove chlorine, chloramine, lead, benzene, cysts, Trihalomethanes, VOCs and MTBE from the water. Most notably, it is capable of removing over 99% of any lead found in the water, which is a major selling point in light of the recent lead contamination crisis.

While it does not remove all contaminants and is not suitable for humidifiers, CPAP machines, and other devices that require distilled water, it is more than adequate for drinking water. Its removal of almost all metal ions significantly improves taste, especially in areas where tap water is often contaminated by rusting or degraded pipes.

Installation is easy, with no tools required to connect it to most faucets. The machine has a lifetime warranty, and other than the battery and filter no components should need to be replaced during the life of the device. It is competitively priced when compared to other units. Its small footprint and space-saving design makes it fit into most kitchen environments, although it may have trouble in cramped kitchens and small apartments.

Countertop water filters: A Buying guide

How do countertop water filters work?

Countertop water filters use different systems of filtration, with a vast majority being micro-porous filters. The filters also operate in different ways; some are fixed directly onto the faucet nozzle while some come as water pitchers. Besides purifying water, filters also help remove unpleasant tastes and odours which may be present in water.

Large water pitchers come with a tank that is filled with water, which runs downstream as it is filtered. This type of water filtration system stands out from the rest because it is very efficient at eliminating harmful, disease-causing microorganisms such as parasites and bacteria.

The other chemical contaminants that can be eliminated using this filtration system are chlorine, radon 222 and organic solvents. Tests also show that countertop water filters can reduce the levels of nitrates, arsenic, nitrates, fluoride and harmful chemicals like mercury and lead while retaining essential minerals that the body needs to stay healthy.

There are a lot of countertop filters on the market. They all appear to be good countertop water filters in their ways. This can make choosing difficult and time-consuming.In the following section, you will learn how to choose the best countertop water filter. Make sure you follow the guidelines to make the right choice.

Factors to consider when buying the best countertop water filter

Pitchers vs faucet filters

Both the faucet water filters and pitcher water filter work in the same way to purify water. However, a water faucet filter is a small point-of-use water filter system ideal for filtering your drinking and cooking water. They are easy to use and attach to the faucet”s aerator. On the other hand, if want a portable, flexible water filter option, consider getting a water pitcher filter.

You don’t need to fix it on tap to filter your water. The unique small design also makes it fit in a refrigerator if you want cool water. A water pitcher filter is helpful if you don’t have much space on your water filter counter.

Size of the filter and filtration capacity

The best countertop water filter should comfortably fit beside the faucet, or on the kitchen counter. If your kitchen space is small, you can still get a suitable size without compromising on quality. If you travel frequently, a portable, compact countertop filter will be an excellent water companion.

Not all countertop water filters effectively remove the same elements in the water. Some will remove most contaminants and at the same time, remove beneficial minerals. That’s why you should know what is in your water and what you want to remove.

Budget

The best countertop water filter should not necessarily leave a dent in your pocket. Don’t be tempted to think that costly countertop water filters are the best. This is not always the case. Your budget should determine the kind of water filtration system that you’re going to purchase. If you’re on a very tight budget, consider buying a simple water countertop filter to get clean water. Make sure you don’t buy an expensive model that doesn’t remove what’s in your water.

Maintenance

Every filter requires maintenance at some point. Different countertop models need a filter replacement at different periods. Some models will use four or more filters at ago to clean your water. You should know the cost of replacing your filters and how often you need to do it before deciding on a model.

It would be best if you considered how easy it is to replace the filter. Most of the water filters we reviewed are easy, and changing the filters is as easy as ABC. The only thing we found as a huge deal breaker was that some units don’t easily open when you need to replace the filters.

Taste of the water

The best countertop water filter should improve the taste of your water. Heavy metals and contaminants like sulfur can give your water a bad taste and odour. Some filters are so efficient that they remove most of the minerals like calcium and magnesium in your water.

Removing these elements, the taste of the water could change. Make sure you know what the countertop water filter removes before you buy. Some models use a special filter to add magnesium and calcium to your water, making it taste better. Fluoride chlorine water filters like Big Berky will mainly give you great tasting drinking water.

Countertop systems vs whole house systems

Whole house water filters are ideal if you need clean water from all water faucets in the house. You install these systems at the entry point to your home. If you’re using hard water from a well, you might need a whole house water filter. This will filter out bacteria and also preserve your appliances from damage and forming scale.

Countertop filters are easy to fix. Once you connect them to the faucet, they are ready to use. These systems provide clean water from a single faucet, unlike whole house water filters that treat all water in the home. Consider what you want when making a purchase.

Frequently asked questions

Is filtered water better than bottled water?

Bottled water is convenient, especially when traveling and you have limited choice. However, there are several problems with using plastic bottled water. Since plastic degrades in heat, hot temperatures mean more chemicals get in your water.

Toxic chemicals can leach in your water and can cause illness to your body. Besides, single-use water bottles end up in landfills, and this negatively impacts on the environment. Investing in a countertop water filter is the best option to replace the need for bottled water.

Can bacteria grow in faucet water filters?

Yes, bacteria can grow inside the faucet water filter. While not all water filters use carbon cartridges, bacteria can grow in carbon. That’s one of the reasons why you need to need to change your filter regularly. Not all water filters inhibit the growth of bacteria. Since a Faucet Water filter cannot filter out bacteria that grow in it, you need to inspect your faucet filter for any indications of bacteria growth.

How much space do I need?

It wouldn’t be correct to say all the best countertop water filters are small in size. Some models have big capacities to store up to 5 gallons of water. They might occupy a larger space on your water filter countertop. Others like water pitcher filters are small and portable and can even fit in a refrigerator. Most of the best countertop water filters are, however compact and don’t need much space.

Conclusion: The Best Countertop water filter?

Best Water Distiller Reviews: Our Recommendations

Water distillation is a simple but effective process. It works by heating up regular water to about 212 degrees Fahrenheit, eliminating any potentially dangerous microbes like bacteria, cysts and viruses. Immediately steam rises, leaving behind dead microbes and any other unwanted substances such as salts, heavy metals and minerals. The steam’s then drawn away, concentrated and condensed, with all contaminants having been left behind. This process ensures not only the purest water, but the most effective removal of volatile organic compounds (VOC). These compounds are chemicals that have a high vapor pressure at ordinary room temperature, allowing them to change from solid to liquid and easily become mixed with water. VOCs have been deemed extremely hazardous by the US Environmental Protection Agency, being capable of causing damage to the eyes, nose, throat, liver, kidney and central nervous system among others.

The levels vary from place to place, but public water is always filled with contaminants, pollutants and even lifeforms that can cause disease. For that reason, it’s highly important that every home has a method of purifying water for daily consumption. There are several methods by which water can be purified, with distillation being not only one of the safest. Modern technology has changed water distillation greatly making it much more effective. This article brings you a comprehensive review of top five best water distillers. Each of the five water distillers was assessed for effectiveness, sturdiness, ease of use, fast distillation cycle, and ease of maintenance. What is distilled water ?

Distilled water is the type of water that has been created from the process of distillation. This involves boiling the water, evaporating it, and condensing to collect the distillate. The process is used to clear off impurities by exploiting varying boiling and evaporation points. As water boils and evaporates, it leaves most contaminants such as lead, mercury and others that have higher boiling and evaporation points. Even for those that might boil at the same temperatures, they still get separated because they have different condensation points.

Notably, the distillation process cannot be considered the surest way of getting pure drinking water. Some volatile chemicals like pesticides still manage to get to the distillate. It is because of this that the reviewed distillation equipment combines the process with filtration.

Can you drink distilled water?

Distilled water is okay to drink. This is because most of the contaminants and dangerous pathogens have already been eliminated. Your piped water often contains heavy metals gathered from metal pipes, treatment chemicals such as chlorine, and possibilities of contamination through leakages.  However, distilled water, and particularly the one you distill using your equipment at home, is better because high temperatures clear off pathogens like bacteria and distillation removes up to 99% of other impurities. It is no doubt the safest way to a healthy family and fulfilling lifestyle.

Conclusion

Getting safe and pure drinking water for a family or office is the dream held closely by many. The five distillers came out to be effective and reliable in clearing all water impurities and supplying clean and pure water. They are sturdily built, attractive, and will add décor to your kitchen. Besides, every water distiller was selected carefully to cover a large price range and shape so that you can pick what is affordable and more appealing. How much does a water filtration system cost? Different systems compared

Clean water is not a luxury but a necessity.

Although the US has one of the safest drinking water systems in the world, pollutants such as heavy metals, pesticides, hormones and pharmaceuticals occasionally find their way into our drinking water supply.

According to the Centers for Disease control, there are an estimated 4-32 million cases of waterborne diseases in the US each year. The most frightening thing about this information is the fact that you might be completely unaware of these contaminants in your drinking water.

Hence, it is crucial that you use a water filtration system to safeguard your family against these potentially life-threatening contaminants. But how much does a water filtration system cost?

How much does a water filtration system cost?

The average cost of setting up a water filtration system in your home is roughly around $1650, but it’s not quite as simple. There are a lot of different systems available, and the cost will vary depending on what you pick.

As this is an average price, your actual cost may vary depending on a variety of factors. While some people can get a system installed in as less as $750, some may have to shell out up to $2500.

What are different types of water filtration systems and their costs?

The choice of a water filtration system depends on some factors including the contaminants you wish to remove.

Simple contaminants such as calcium or magnesium salts or sulfur can be eliminated quite easily.

On the other hand, if your tap water contains contaminants such as lead, pesticides or hormones, a more elaborate system is required.

The best way to decide which system you need is doing a water quality test. Several water analysis test kits are available in the market that allows you to find out the levels of specific contaminants in your water supply.

Most of these kits cost less than $50 and given the information they provide; it is a small price to pay.

Once you have analyzed your water supply, it is time to decide the filtration system that is best for your needs. But before we jump to it, let’s familiarize us with the types of water purifiers that are available on the market.

1. Distillation Units

Distillation is a process of evaporating the dirty, contaminated water and condensing the vapor in the separate place. As you can imagine, distillation is great if your water supply has a lot of dissolved solids in it.

As the process is carried out near the boiling point of water, most dissolved impurities can’t evaporate with the water.

Hence, after the vapor is condensed, you get mainly contamination-free and pure water. Distillation can remove bacteria and other pathogens, heavy metals and other dissolved solids.

The downside of this process is that this process also removes beneficial minerals from the water as well. Also, distilled water can taste quite flat due to the removal of oxygen during the process.

There are several types of distillers available for homeowners. Small, countertop versions are, well, small. They can distil and purify only a few gallons of water an hour, and you must refill the system at regular intervals.

Although there are some bigger models as well, they too require some form of manual input to operate.

As far as the cost goes, you can get a counter-top distillation unit for around $150.

However, as the capacity of the unit increases so does the cost. The cost of a large distiller can reach upwards of $1500.

Pros

  • Removes most dissolved impurities including bacteria and other pathogens
  • Is available as a counter-top as well as floor unit
  • Can cost significantly less compared to some other filtration units

Cons

  • Distilled water can taste a bit flat
  • Removes even the beneficial minerals from the water
  • Is not very energy efficient process and needs some form of electric supply to work
  • Requires some manual input to operate

2. Reverse Osmosis Systems

Reverse osmosis or RO for short is a very popular water purification technology. The RO systems can be quite sophisticated with multiple stages of water purification. Many systems even employ a UV decontamination step to destroy any surviving bacteria or other pathogens.

At its core, an RO system works on the principle of reverse osmosis, which you probably must have guessed!

In a, RO water purification system, water is passed through a series of ‘semi-permeable’ membranes.

These membranes have holes that allow only water to pass through along with some dissolved small ions such as sodium and calcium.

Large atoms such as heavy metals, hormones, pesticides and pharmaceutical compounds are left behind.

One of the biggest advantages of RO purification is the taste. As the RO water retains dissolved oxygen and minerals, it has a better taste compared to distilled water.

You can buy RO units in different sizes and capacities. While there are some counter-top systems on the market as well, most popular RO systems are usually faucet based systems.

The cost of these systems varies depending on the sophistication of the unit and the output. While some low-end units can be around $150-$200, some high-end units with multiple stages of purification or a UV treatment feature can easily cost upwards of $1000.

One thing to keep in mind while purchasing reverse osmosis systems is that most of the systems require professional installation unless you are buying a counter-top version.

The semipermeable membrane filters also need to be replaced at regular intervals to ensure proper functioning. Hence, you should think of these recurring costs as well. Although these expenses are not that high, they will be there nonetheless.

Pros

  • Removes most pathogens, dissolved impurities such as pesticides, heavy metals, and even volatile impurities
  • Available as both counter-top units as well as faucet based units
  • Require little or no manual intervention to work
  • Preserves the taste of water and keeps mineral content high
  • Relatively energy efficient operation compared to distillation

Cons

  • Require professional installation and regular maintenance
  • Can cost more if you opt for multi-stage units with UV treatment
  • Recurring costs can add up in the form of labor and replacement filters

3. Whole house water filtration systems

Whole house water filters are more complex in functionality and scope as well. These systems are huge and can filter water on a continuous basis.

As a matter of fact, most of these systems are hooked right to the incoming water supply to your house.

These systems usually employ some different methods to get the water cleaned. Some of the methods used in these systems include the following.

As I said, the systems a quite big and as a result, you will need a professional installation. Although they are not that difficult to maintain, you will need professional help to keep them up and to run in top shape.

The biggest advantage of these systems, as you can imagine, is the convenience. Once the system is in place, you get pure, filtered water right from your faucets.

As the systems operate ‘in-line,’ there is no need to store the filtered water. Whenever you need purified drinking water, just turn on your faucet. It is as simple as that.

These units often come with additional features and some can even operate without electricity. As you can imagine, these units are the most expensive home water purification system. The average cost of this kind of water filtration system can range between $400 to upwards of $10,000.

Pros

  • Can purify several gallons of water in no time
  • As they are in-line systems, they can operate continuously
  • No need to store filtered water
  • Some systems don’t even require electricity to work
  • Depending on the setup, can be as efficient as an RO system to purify water

Cons

  • Significantly more expensive compared to the earlier two
  • Need professional installation and maintenance
  • You need to have regular maintenance and check-ups to keep it running smooth

Factors Affecting the Average Cost of Water Filtration System

Some factors affect the cost of a water filtration system. Let’s take a look at them one by one.

The type of impurities in your water supply

The cost of a filtration system will vary greatly depending on the type of contaminants present in your water supply.

For instance, if your water supply is already quite clean, but you just need to get rid of the funky smell or taste, a small tap based system might be enough for you.

However, if your water supply contains some other impurities such as pesticides or heavy metals, you may require sophisticated filtration units such as Ro or distillation. These units cost a lot more than the simple tap filter.

Size of the System

As you can very well imagine, the more water you need to get filtered, the bigger unit you will need. And it goes without saying that larger units cost more.

Whether it is distillation unit, an RO unit or a whole house filtration system unit, big units cost more than small ones.

Running Costs

Maintainance and running costs can quickly add up.

For instance, if you go for an RO based system, you will need professional installation and maintenance which costs money.

Also, these systems require their membrane filters replaced after a certain amount of usage. Again, replacement filters cost money, and all this adds up to the expense of the unit itself.

Should you buy a single tap water filter unit?

Now, this is a bit more complicated question than you may think.

If your water supply is relatively clean and you only require filtered water for drinking and cooking then, yes, a single tap filtration system is a good option.

These systems are usually attached to a pipe that supplies water to a faucet. So, as the water passes through the system, it is filtered before it is dispensed through the faucet. Don’t get fooled by the small size of these units.

These can be quite complex and sophisticated as well. They can do a great job of removing a considerable amount of impurities from your tap water.

However, you will need some plumbing knowledge to install these systems. If you can, hiring a professional plumber is the best way to go.

As far as the cost of these systems goes, it varies greatly depending on the brand and the technology utilized in the unit.

Usually, these units cost somewhere between $50 to $100. However, as they do have a lifespan, they need to be replaced after some time.

Conclusion

As you can see, the question of how much does a water filtration system cost and the average cost of a water filtration system is not quite straightforward! It really depends on your specific filtration needs. If you are only concerned about your drinking water, you could even just use a simple pitcher filter and that would be it!

So in a toss up between Pur vs Brita faucet filters, which is better?

In this article, we dive deep into the unique features that set these two brands apart. Read to the end to familiarize with these brands. Learn more about faucet filters and how to choose the best filter.

Pur vs Brita Faucet Filter: The companies

Pur is an American brand that has been in this realm for over thirty years. Their products range includes water filter faucet mounts, pitchers, side taps, and filtration systems, among others.

On the other hand, Brita is a German company. It has been in business since 1966. It has roots all over the world, and their products range from household filters and faucets to dispensers and professional-grade filters and accessories.

Both Pur and Brita have been in the market for a long time. Their products have withstood the trial of time and emerged top of the ranking. This makes it harder for you to decide which brand will best serve your needs if you base your decision on this factor alone.

Now let’s dive into the intricate features that you must have in mind when shopping for a Pur or Brita faucet filter.

Which is Better Pur or Brita Faucet Filter?

Brita 7540545 On Tap Faucet Water Filter System, Pack of 1, White w/Indicator

Now that we are on the same page regarding the elements to look out for let’s explore Pur vs Brita. In the process, you will determine which one will be the best filter for your needs.

Remember that both companies have multiple models in the market that fall in this selection. We use features that cut across all models to compare the Pur vs Brita faucet filter qualities.

Filtration quality

The primary job of both Brita and Pur filters is to eliminate contaminants from water. After the filtration process, the water’s taste and odor ought to be better than before.

A Pur faucet filter reduces over seventy pollutants from your water. This includes 99% of lead and many other contaminants found in tap, spring, and groundwater.

According to the Pur website, all of their faucet filters are certified to reduce ten times more contaminants than the leading Brita models.

Regarding the list of contaminants that each faucet can remove, Pur has the upper hand over Brita.

Pur faucet filters remove lead, mercury, chlorine, pharmaceuticals, and many other impurities than the Brita variations.

Does this make Pur water filter better than Brita? Well, we will answer this question after we explore all the features. But, for the filtration quality Pur is above Brita.

The Brita faucet filtration system removes 60 contaminants from water, including 99% of lead. It is clear that the number of impurities that Brita can handle is lower than that which Pur systems can manage effortlessly.

Taste results on the internet indicate that water from both Pur and Brita water filters has a good quality taste and no odor. This means that both filters can do the job, but the Brita models may not be able to get rid of certain contaminants.

Also, you may have to flush your Pur water filter with at least five gallons before you start any filtration. Feedback from users shows that failure to do this may result in some weird tasting water.

Winner: Pur

Design and construction

Brita and Pur have compact models that make fitting in any home or RV effortlessly. Their designs are very similar; they both screw on to the faucet and filters tap water to remove any contaminants.

The orientation of the various models from these manufacturers differ. These portable units from the two giants have certain similarities regarding the style, but the construction and final product differ.

Activated carbon is used in both models. In the filter, this component helps absorb lead, cadmium, and other dissolved minerals.

The Pur models are available in chrome and black finish. These finishes elevate the aesthetic value of the models from this producer considerably. Other than the beauty, the finish that any Pur faucet filter has is protective.

The material they use to finish their water filter best for faucets plays a vital role in ensuring that it serves you for an extended period without any visible wear and tear. This is not to say the Pur faucet filters will last an eternity, but you will get value for your money.

Brita faucets have both plastic and chrome finishes. They may not be as stylish as the Pur designs, but they are well made. The filter mechanisms are almost similar and they play an intricate role in getting rid of lead among other toxic substances.

The filters from this manufacturer have a smooth finish that serves the function it is made for. The shape of the Brita faucet filters also differs from that of Pur units. Although this may not be a critical element to look at, it may affect your choice of brand and model too.

If you choose to buy Pur models, you can opt for the vertical or horizontal filtration systems. From the images, it is clear that the designs that these brands feature are compact and suitable for small kitchens.

The advanced Brita model comes with three different water selections, but the basic filters for faucets do not have this option. Also, models from Brita have LED indicators that will let you know when you need to change the filters in your system.

Same as the Brita units, Pur models also have LED indicators monitoring the filter’s lifespan. Some of the models that they have come with Bluetooth trackers. This makes it possible for you to track your water usage in real-time.

Winner: Tie

Lifespan and maintenance

Before you buy any unit ensure that you know the estimated duration that it will serve you. The lifespan of the filter system determines the overall maintenance cost of the same.

The initial cost of acquisition for any filter does not specify that of maintenance. Buying a Pur system is expensive, but the repairs and replacement of the filters are not.

If you opt for the Brita fsystem, the initial cost of purchase is on the lower end. Maintenance, however, is not.

Both Pur basic filter and the MineralClear filter have the same lifespan. They both clean a total of 100 gallons before you need to replace the filter.

The usage of filtered water in your home will dictate how soon you have to replace the cartridges in your system. The Pur water system will serve for two to three months.

The annual maintenance cost for the basic filter is roughly $51, whereas that for the MineralClear filter is $54.

During replacement, you can upgrade from the basic version of this brand to the MineralClear option for just $3 more.

Brita faucet filter has the same lifespan as the Pur models. The main difference is that; this company does not have an assortment of filter systems like Pur.

The various Brita models can purify a sum of 100 gallons before it becomes necessary to replace. This filtered water usage will last anywhere from two to three months.

Concerning affordability in this Pur vs Brita review, Pur takes the crown for this feature. They filter the same 100 gallons of water, but the cost of replacement is higher for Brita units when we compare them to Pur models.

What is a Faucet Filter, anyway?

The choice and usage of a faucet water filter are only possible if you know what you are looking for. Which is why it is important that we start by understanding what the best water filter is.

Activated carbon is the component that makes both Brita and Pur water filtration systems the best. Activated carbon absorbs both organic compounds and pollutants such as lead.

This filter component is used in many water filter systems for maximum results.

A faucet filter is a filtration system that connects to the existing water system infrastructure in your house. It also fits water filtration systems in recreational vehicles (RVs).

They are also known as point-of-use filters. They help remove contaminants such as chlorine, lead, mercury, and other impurities. A filter that falls in this family is believed to have a place in the kitchen only, but this is not true.

You can use this type of filter anywhere in your house where you have a faucet. The bathroom and kitchen are the top areas where you will find this type of filters effective. In recent times, these filters are becoming common in most households.

Many reasons have led to this. For starters, any filter in this selection is inexpensive and easily available. They are also easy to install and maintain.

For this reasons, both Pur and Brita water filters have gained popularity in the market at a faster rate. They are among the best water filters in the market readily available in most if not all regions of the world.

What faucet filter features to look for

To know which of the two is better than the other, you must be privy to info regarding the fundamental features that every faucet filter must-have.

Many factors come into play, and there are elements that you cannot overlook if you want an effective filter. Here are some of the things that you must consider before you buy any kitchen faucet filter.

Size

most reviews indicate that most faucet filters are roughly the same size. Do not approximate the size of your faucet.

Measure it to determine which filter will fit seamlessly. Buying a unit that does not fit properly will make it hard for the faucet filtration function to work optimally.

The correct size also helps you prevent leakage among many other risks. Brita and Pur models have standard dimensions.

Installation

a faucet filter is among the easiest to set up in your home. They do not require expert hands to get the installation right.

Manufacturers of the various brands in the market provide instructions to help you with the setup. Always adhere to the guidelines in the manual, and the process will be a breeze.

Style

Water filtration systems such as faucet filters come in different designs. Buying a unit without reviewing this element may cause installation problems and others in the long run.

Confirm the setup in your house and make an informed decision regarding style when you buy any filter, including Pur and Brita models.

Cost

Most faucet filter brands are inexpensive. This, however, does not mean that all of them are. You will come across some pricey models and others that are affordable.

Setting a budget will help you pick a faucet filter that is within your available funds limit when getting a one of your choice.

Changing sensors

If a faucet filter does not have any way to show that the filters need replacement do not buy it.

This element is critical since it determines the quality of water that you will produce in your home. When the filter is no longer effective, you have to replace or buy a new faucet filter system.

Filters with sensors make it easier for you to determine when you need to replace or buy a new unit.

The finish a unit has, the ability to eliminate lead and other pollutants, as well as the filter cartridges are among the many other factors that you must consider.

Faucet Filters Vs. Pitcher Filters

Brita and Pur both have pitcher filters in the market. These two companies are among the top-notch enterprises that avail pitchers to help people who cannot use the other filtration systems for whatever reason.

If you reside in an area with many contaminants like lead in the water, do not go for this option. The filtration system is not as effective that of the faucet filter.

The filtration system is not as effective that of any Brita or Pur faucet filter. Water filter pitchers offer you the easiest way to remove impurities from tap water.

They are lightweight and portable; hence you can carry one from one place to another.

Lead, mercury, chlorine, and asbestos are among the many impurities that the pitchers can remove. Before we start on the comparison, we will discuss some of the important features to look out for.

Certification

Regulatory bodies in the water business work towards ensuring that all systems released to the market are certified.

Both Brita and Pur are brands that operate with the guidelines from their respective control bodies. Always ensure that a pitcher filter system is approved before you buy.

Ease of use

Filter pitchers are not popular in most households because some are not easy to use. Practicality is a factor that you cannot forget to check when buying a pitcher that removes contaminants from tap water.

Pitchers rely on gravity and not pressure to perform the function it is designed for. The time it takes for the water to be filtered is longer than other methods which is why you must be keen on the model you pick.

Purpose

The intended use of the pitcher is one of the top factors to have in mind. If your household uses a lot of filtered water, then this option may not be the best option for you. It takes longer to filter water hence only ideal for drinking water.

Pitcher water filter models from Brita have better qualities than those from Pur. The technology used in the various designs is the main feature the puts the Brita models over the Pur ones.

Pur relies on LED light tech to notify you when the filter needs replacement. Brita designs are a few steps ahead because of the technology they use.

Every time you open the reservoir, the system record this. Once you have filtered the 40 gallons of water that these filters can handle you get a signal for replacement.

Pitcher filters may be ideal for certain situations but not most. If you engage in outdoor activities in an area without faucets, you can consider them.

For home use, explore the other options available before you settle for any of the pitcher brands.

From the information above, you realize that Brita and Pur pitcher filters are not as effective as any of the faucet water filter available. If you intend to filter a lot of water, they will frustrate you.

Faucet water filters are designed to provide efficiency and reliability at all times. The ease of installation, use, and maintenance should draw you to the faucet option over the pitcher alternative

The features that we discuss for both faucet and pitcher filters should help you make the better choice. In our opinion, faucet filters are the way to go.

The Alkaline Water Pitcher – 2.5 Liters is a special piece designed for fast performance and supply of fresh and alkaline water. While the common filters focused on clearing most minerals, they create a problem of denying the human body essential minerals. For instance, your body requires magnesium which forms part of sleep cycle hormone. Calcium and phosphorous are also required in small quantities for bones strengthening and division cell purposes, respectively. This filter ensures that you are supplied with all the necessary minerals for better health.

This water filter pitcher came out to be more appealing because all the water goes through the filter and not across it. When you add water, it goes to the upper holding chamber and is then filtered through to the lower chamber. You can, therefore, see the process because the pitcher is clear and keep adding water for continuous supply. Though it is not big enough for supplying large families or big offices, it was found very useful for outdoor activities such a camping, beach activities, and small offices.

Cuisinart Clean Water Filtration System

Although water quality is crucial for our health, it seems that we tend to pay little attention to it. As a matter of fact, The New York Times recently reported about a country-wide study that found nearly 20% of all the tap water in the US is unsafe to drink.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the top 10 contaminants in tap water include dangerous microbes such as Giardia, Legionella, Salmonella, and Norovirus apart from other pollutants such as heavy metals and pesticides. The situation sure sounds pretty bad, don’t you think?

Well, let me apologize for beginning this article on such a grim note, but there is a bright side to the whole situation after all!

Filtering your drinking water can take care of most contaminants in your tap water.

That said, not all water filters are made equal, and some are far superior to the others. That’s precisely what makes this review so crucial.

In this review, we will take an in-depth look at the Cuisinart CleanWater® water-filtration system; the best counter-top water filtration system on the market. Sure, there are several counter-top water filtration systems on the market, but the Cuisinart CleanWater® edges them all both in the efficiency and aesthetics.

Cuisinart is a highly respected brand that has been manufacturing kitchen appliances since 1971 and their experience in the appliance industry are on full display with the CleanWater® system. It is as elegant as it is functional.

There is a lot to love about this beautiful water filtration system. So, let’s take a closer look and see what makes it stand out.

What is the Cuisinart CleanWater® water filtration system?

Cuisinart CleanWater® water filtration system is a small water filtration unit that you can set on your counter and has a capacity of about 2 gallons.

The best part of the system is that it does not require a continuous water source unlike many others on the market. As a result, you can install this system almost anywhere in your house- bedroom, dining room or even the basement.

That said, the unit does require a power outlet to work, so you will need to place it within a few feet of a working outlet. But that’s pretty much it; there is no other requirement for operating this nifty little filtration unit.

One of the best features of this unit is that you can control the temperature of the filtered water. It has two outlets one for hot water and one for the cold.

After you set up the unit and add the unfiltered water, the unit is ready with filtered water within 10 minutes. However, it might take up to 30 minutes for the water to chill in the unit.

What are the components of the filtration system?

The Cuisinart CleanWater® filtration system can be divided into two parts- the water tank and the main filtration unit.

The water tank can hold about half a gallon of unfiltered water while the main filtration unit holds between 1 to 1.5 gallons of filtered water. Filling water in the water tank is quite easy as well. The tank has a flip lid that is conveniently located to pour unfiltered water into the tank.

The main filtration unit houses the filtration cartridge and two water tanks- one for hot water and one for the cold. The capacity of both the tanks is around half a gallon, which is sufficient for a small family. The water drainage plugs are located at the bottom of the unit to drain the water and clean the system.

The system is really ruggedly built as well. There is no imperfection, and it is aesthetically very pleasing. It is so well designed that you will want to display it on your countertop! The brushed metal finish is lovely, and the transparent water tank is also made from high-quality BPA and Phthalate-free plastic. Overall, there is not much to complain about the design and build.

Performance

So, the CleanWater® system is pretty, but what about the performance? Well, in a word, the performance is fantastic!

The system can handle almost any quality of tap water you will throw at it. It is quite efficient and gets rid of most major contaminants. The filtered water has no weird odor or taste, which was an issue with some other filtration units we tested. So, it is definitely a good thing.

According to the scientific water quality tests reported on Cuisinart’s website, the system can eliminate 98.7% lead, 97.5% chlorine, 85% copper, 92.5% Tetrachloroethylene (a contaminant) 89.8% Toluene and 92.8% Mercury.

The water filtration performance is at par with some of the more expensive inline water filtration systems.

Apart from the efficient filtration, the CleanWater® also has an impressive energy management system in place. The Smart Energy Saver switch located on the side of the unit can reduce the energy requirement by up to 50%.

The system does so by switching off the internal heating mechanism, and you won’t get any heated water. But if you live in warmer areas and you don’t need hot water, this is a great feature to have.

That said, the hot water coming from the unit is really hot! I mean you can use the water to make a cup of tea, it is that hot. So, if you like this feature, you got it with this unit. The hot water tap also features a child-safety lock mechanism so it can’t be accidentally turned on by your kids.

The refilling process on the system is also quite convenient. All you need to do to refill the system is hold up the lid on the top transparent tank and fill it to the ‘fill-line.’ The system filters water at room temperature and then stores it in the two tanks to either heat it or chill it. Both the tanks are made from the leak-proof and erosion-proof material.

The filters on this unit have a life span of about three months, which is quite respectable. When you purchase the unit, it comes with one filter pre-installed in the unit and another spare one in the box. So, you are looking at about six months of filtered water before you will need to purchase the filters.

Cleaning the CleanWater® filtration system is also quite easy. All you do is rinse the tanks with a little soapy water, and that’s pretty much it! It is recommended to clean the system at least once in a couple of months. I prefer to clean it every time I change the filters, but you can do it more often if you want.

Installation and setup

The installation of the CleanWater® system is relatively straightforward. You don’t need any special tools or anything like that. The most critical step in the installation process is the filter cartridge installation. Although it is not complicated at all, you must pay attention to get the cartridges in perfectly. If your filter cartridges are not inserted correctly, the unit will not function as designed.

Once the unit is assembled and you have it plugged in the wall outlet, it takes about 15 minutes before water starts coming out of the taps. It takes an additional 15 minutes if you want hot water. However, once the initial prep is over, you get a continuous supply of hot or cold water provided you top-off the top tank regularly.

Using the system

Well, it is quite easy to use the filtration system. There is a single on/off button on the system that powers the CleanWater® on. The power button is illuminated in a blue hue with a LED to tell you that the system is turned on.

There are two spouts dispensing hot and cold/room temperature water. There are three LED indicators on the unit as well. The indicator LED for ‘Hot, ‘ and ‘Cold’ come on once the unit is ready to dispense hot or cold water (takes about 30 minutes and 15 minutes respectively, after initial setup). The third LED indicator is for the power saver mode. If you flip the power saver switch located on the side of the unit, the heating is turned off, and the indicator comes on.

There is no leakage or anything like that when the unit is idle. The buttons to dispense water (hot, cold or room temperature) are easy to press, and the hot water switch has a child lock as well.

Overall, the system is quite easy to install and setup.

Pros of the filtration system

The CleanWater® system is very well designed and has a lot of things working for it. Some of the most impressive things include the following:

  • Excellent build quality- brushed metal finish looks stunning
  • Does not require a continuous water supply
  • The installation takes less than 30 minutes
  • The quality of filtered water is on par with even the more expensive units
  • Dispenses both hot and cold water
  • Has a power saver mode that can save up to 50% of energy
  • Easy to clean
  • The filters last three months and the package includes a spare filter
  • Operating the unit is easy as well

Cons of the filtration system

I did not have a lot of issues with the CleanWater® filtration system. However, there is no perfect filtration system, and even this one has some minor issues. Some of the things that I am not thrilled with include the following:

  • The unit makes a bit of noise when the heating or cooling is turned on. The noise is not a lot, but if the room is quiet, you will hear a humming every time the heater or cooler comes on. Again, this is not a big deal for me, personally, but would have been nice if the unit was a bit quieter.
  • Another gripe with this unit has to do with the buttons that dispense water. These buttons need to be pushed down quite hard. Now, it might not be a big deal for most people, but if you have someone with arthritis in your family, it can get a bit difficult for them to push these buttons. I would have preferred tactile buttons like the ones you see on soda fountain machines.

The verdict

The CleanWater® water filtration system is an excellent counter-top filtration system that is as efficient as it is beautiful. The two-gallon capacity is ideal for a small family and the fact that you can get hot and cold filtered water takes the system a notch above the competition. It is easy to set up and use as well.

So, do we recommend the CleanWater® counter-top filtration system? You bet we do!

The only problem is that it is not on sale anymore. In fact, it has been discontinued.

The company cuisinart does not manufacture any water filtration systems.

Dangers Of Not Changing Refrigerator Water Filter(Yikes!)

There are many components of our refrigerator we take for granted. While we may clean the inside of our fridge every now and again, there are some components we often forget. One of those components is the water filter in the fridge. Evidently, this should be cleaned on a regular basis, but not everyone does. To learn why it is essential to clean your refrigerator’s water filter, be sure to read on.

What Happens If You Don’t Change A Refrigerator Water Filter?

A dirty refrigerator filter can have numerous consequences. Some of these can be quite obvious, while others you may not have considered. Below, we have listed the most common disadvantages of unclean refrigerator filters.

Taste and odor problems

One of the most obvious problems you will encounter is an unpleasant taste in the water. As your filter no longer filters out impurities such as chemicals, minerals, and microbes, your water will start to get a strange taste.

As impurities start to end up in your water supply, you may notice an unpleasant odor too. Chemicals can give the water a chemical smell, but bacteria can cause an unusual smell in the water too. It is therefore important that your water filter remains clean and pristine.

Unclear Ice

A decent ice cube will be relatively clear, providing it is made with clean water. When you use water filled with chemicals and impurities, it may cause your ice to become cloudy. So, if you are getting cloudy ice cubes from your refrigerator water, it is time to change that water filter asap.

Reduced water flow

When your filter gets clogged up, it is likely that the water flow will slow down greatly. Most filters will remove chalk from the water. As it starts to build up, your water supply may become blocked. To prevent this from happening, it is essential to change the water filter on a regular basis.

High chemical content

If your water filter is not doing its job, dangerous chemicals will end up in your water supply. A dirty filter can expose you to chemicals such as asbestos, arsenic, radium, pesticides, chromium and loads more.

One would assume that your regular water supply is free of all chemicals. After all, the water is purified before it reaches you, does it not? Well, this is not necessarily the case. Chemicals such as fluoride and chloride can be added to a water supply, and this could be harmful to some people.

Is It Necessary To Change A Refrigerator Water Filter?

It is necessary to change your water filter every so often. After all, a water filter is designed to remove bad odors, chemicals, and other impurities. To remove these, your filter uses a combination of sediment and carbon filtration.

When it comes to the water supply at your home, it is important to remember that your water travels for several miles underground before it reaches your house. While it travels, it could pick up all types of impurities. It could be subjected to animal waste, dead animals, medications, sewage, manufacturing waste, and more. To prevent this from entering your water, a refrigerator filter will remove harmful compounds such as chlorine, lead, and VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds).

If you do not change your water filter on a regular basis, one of the following things may happen and influence your water supply negatively:

Filter obstructions

Since there can be numerous contaminants in the water supply, these contaminants can start to clog your filter. It can become visible by a reduced water flow.

Inability to filter out carbon

When the filter reaches its maximum capacity, it will no longer be able to filter out carbon. In these cases, carbon will enter in your water supply.

Increased number of bacteria

As your water filter becomes ineffective, it will no longer be able to filter out those harmful bacteria. Bacteria can actually start to multiply more, especially when your filter becomes a haven for high levels of carbon.

Because of the bacteria piling up in the water supply, dirty water can make you sick. Therefore, it is not uncommon for people to experience flu-like symptoms or gastrointestinal distress after the consumption of dirty refrigerator water.

Is It Really Necessary To Change Your Refrigerator Water Filter Every Six Months?

Most manufacturers recommend changing the water filter every six months. They also warn consumers against using the same water filter for over a year, as the carbon levels inside the water could reach dangerous levels and start to hurt your health.

To further understand why water needs to be purified, here are some of the main contaminants a filter will protect you against:

Lead

This is a toxic substance that could cause problems with your hearing, kidneys, heart and brain. Therefore, your water supply should never contain any traces of lead.

Chlorine

Even though chlorine does disinfect your drinking water and therefore has a purpose in your water supply, high levels of this substance can give your water a chemical taste. For some people, it can even burn a little in their throat. Therefore, chlorine levels in drinking water should always be kept at a minimum.

Volatile organic compounds

This is an umbrella term for compounds such as herbicides, insecticides, and pesticides. As they can enter the drinking water while they travel from the supplier to your home, it is essential to have a proper filter removing these contaminants from your drinking water.

Keeping Your Water Filter Pristine Is The Key To Success

Since you have made it to the end of this article, you have read through all the harmful contaminants that could enter your water supply. To ensure these harmful contaminants do not remain in your drinking water, you must keep your refrigerator’s water filter as clean and pristine as possible. Naturally, the best way to do that is by changing your water filter every six months (or as often as recommended by your refrigerator’s manufacturer).

Alexapure Pro Water Filtration/Purification System Review

Water is life. Every human being requires a specific amount of drinking water on a daily basis. However, the larger percentage of all available water is most likely to contain contaminants of different kinds. Such water requires filtration before consumption in order to rid it of any harmful elements, which is why a filter like the Alexapure Pro Water Filtration system can be a must-have.

Alexapure Pro Stainless Steel Water Filtration System - 5,000 Gallon Throughput Capacity

There are numerous models of filtration systems available in the market. These systems work in various ways and to different levels of efficiency. Mostly, some of these systems end up not fulfilling the users’ expectations, and might even expose the users to water-borne ailments.

However, the Alexapure Pro Water Filtration System beats them all in the water filtration arena. This groundbreaking water filtration system is mainly designed to provide you and your household with contaminant free water.

In this review, we have taken an in-depth look at the features that make this product the best water filtration system available in the market.

How Does the Alexapure system Work ?

The Alexapure water filtration system is designed to remove up to 99.9% of all water impurities.

The high-efficiency level is achieved through combining the filtration power of a composite shell of ceramic with the superior filtration capabilities of an all new gravity block core.

The ceramic shell is coated with silver, which makes it a powerful antibacterial agent.

The ceramic shell is the outer shell, which blocks large molecules and contaminants. Once it passes through the outer shell, the inner shell is a carbon(composite) filter which removes organic contaminants and many pathogens.

Alexapure Filters are what are known as gravity filters, which use the force of gravity to pull water from the top chamber in to the bottom chamber through the filter block above.

Although there is just one filter block built in, you can use multiple filter blocks to speed up the process.

Once the water has filtered into the bottom chamber, you can simply use the spigot to dispense water. The filtration system can be used in places with and without a power connection since it does not require electricity to operate.

All it needs is the force of gravity, which thankfully is available everywhere! Heh heh heh…

What features does the Alexapure filter have?

The Alexapure water filtration system is laden with great features to ensure you get a constant supply of pure, healthy drinking water.

You can use any kind of fresh water with this filter and it will clean it up. The only water you should not use is salt water, which will screw up the filter.

Alexapure filter highlights:

  • It has a filter capacity of 5,000 gallons. Such a large reserve of water ensures that you will never run short of clean drinking water.
  • The filtration system boasts a stainless steel construction that is both hygienic and durable.
  • Ease of assembly and low maintenance. There is nothing worse than a water filtration system that you cannot disassemble easily for cleaning and reassemble.
  • The system is powered by gravity and will not incur any electricity costs.
  • The filter has an extended lifespan thus eliminating the need for constant replacement.
  • It has a spigot that provides instant access to purified fresh water for drinking.

In addition to these amazing features, this water filtration system greatly saves on space.

What do you get with it out of the box?

It is compact and thus can be placed almost anywhere in the house. The box package comes with the following items upon shipping:

Alexapure gravity block filter with a hybrid shell of ceramic. It comprises the major filtration components of the system.
There is a rubber base ring to provide a nonslip anchor for the system.

  • One stainless steel upper chamber.
  • A lower chamber, also made of stainless steel.
  • A lid made of stainless steel.
  • There is also the spigot assembly.
  • The knob assembly and rubber plugs are also included in the box, together with manual bearing instructions for assembly.

Each Alexapure Pro Water Filtration System package comes with one gravity block filter. However, the system is designed such that it has the capacity for four filters. You can be able to increase the pure water flow rate without compromising the quality of your drinking water.

The Alexapure water filtration system is one of the easiest to maintain. It is however highly recommended that special care and attention be given as follows when needed.

Contaminants removed by the Alexapure Pro System

You can check test results here.

Nitrite
Aluminum
Arsenic
Lead
Chromium-6
Chloramines
Chlorine
Fluoride
Radioactive substances
Benzene

VOCs (volatile organic compounds)
MTBE
Glyphosate (sold as Roundup and other herbicides)
DDT
Pharmaceuticals
e. Coli
Bacteria and viruses
Cysts

How much time does the Alexapure Pro take to filter?

Since we’re relying on gravity, water is constantly pushed down through the filters. The Alexapure has a rated capacity of 1 gallon per hour. For drinking purposes, this is more than suitable even for a decent sized family.

The more water there is the more the force of gravity is acting, so it will filter faster. So to keep it working at full speed, you’ll want to keep the upper chamber as full as possible.

Chamber Cleaning

Since the chambers are made of stainless steel, they are by default easy to clean. However, you will need to thoroughly rinse the interiors with cool, fresh water before first use. The same is recommended every time you disassemble the system. The exteriors should be regularly wiped clean with a soft, clean cloth.

Filter Exterior cleaning process

Untreated water contains a lot of minerals. During the filtration process, some of these minerals may form a coating on the system’s ceramic shell. This layer hardly affects the water filtration process, but it needs to be occasionally cleaned. It is recommended that you carefully remove the filters from the upper chamber and clean their exteriors.

The best way of cleaning the filter exteriors is by use of a scouring pad with no soap, gently scrubbing away the mineral buildup and thoroughly rinsing them in fresh water. After cleaning, replace them in the upper chamber.

How to Change the Filters

The Alexapure gravity block filter is designed to provide you with clean drinking water for the longest period. The filters hardly ever stop working. However, it is imperative that you once in a while change the filters to maintain a steady flow of pure drinking water. It is recommended to change your filters upon noticing a drop in the water flow rate.

Why Alexapure Pro Water Filtration System?

As we saw in the beginning, water is the single most essential commodity for life. In this regard, a steady supply of this commodity is a must have for every household. There are, however, many contaminants in water.

Some of this water is supplied through pipe systems that were installed decades ago. As we all know, water contains minerals that coat and corrode these pipes over time.

The water that passes through these pipes could be harmful if taken directly from the tap, hence the need for an efficient water filtration system.

Again, the Alexapure water filtration system comes with a full money-back guarantee from the manufacturer. There is an initial one year warranty during which you can return the product for a full refund if you do not find it satisfactory.
Another excellent benefit of having the Alexapure water filtration system is the versatility.

Since this product does not require electricity to operate, this system can be used anywhere in the world. It means that it is the best water filtration system to carry on your outdoor trips, and also a great choice of system for those working in areas with scanty water supply.

When you go shopping for the most efficient water filtration system for your household, look no further. The benefits that this system offers compared to the other models in the market are outstanding, and this review will guide you into making a wise choice.

What is the cost per gallon if you use Alexapure?

Since replacement filters cost around $90, your cost per gallon – considering that one filter lasts for 5000 gallons will be about $0.02 per gallon.

However you should bear in mind that the full one gallon per hour speed will only be achieved if you have 4 filters in the cartridge instead of just the one.

With just one filter, it will filter much slower. But if you’re using four filters at once the cost per gallon is still only around $0.08, which is still significantly cheaper than any grocery store.

Is the pH of water going to change?

Because the Alexapure removes certain contaminants which make the water slightly acidic, you may find that filtered water is slightly more alkaline.

However, there is no exact number you can really assign as far as pH is concerned – it won’t become extremely alkaline, but the degree of alkalinity will also be determined by what kind of water you put into it to start.

Does it remove minerals?

Not all things dissolved in our drinking water are necessarily bad – minerals like calcium or magnesium can actually be good for you. So are these removed by the filter, too?

No!

These sometimes beneficial minerals remain in the water so if you have slightly hard water the hardness will not change. Your water will retain that “mineral” taste if it has it – the only taste and smell to go away is that of chemicals and contaminants.

You can verify this using a TDS (total dissolved solids) meter – the reading will not change before and after filtering, indicating that the mineral content is still almost the same.

If you want to completely remove minerals from your water, too, then you’ll have to use an RO system.

Alexapure vs Berkey

Comparing the Alexapure filter and the Berkey filters, you’ll see that the differences are only very slight – though some of the differences can have an impact.

Both are stainless steel gravity filters, with a few slight variations between them:

Filter

Both Alexapure and Berkey use a carbon filter. The only difference is that the Alexapure filter contains a silver/ceramic shell, whereas the Berkey does not have this kind of shell.

Removing contaminants

Alexapure and Berkey are nearly equally effective at removing contaminants:

  • Glyphosate: Berkey 75%, Alexapure 99%
  • Lead: Berkey 99%, Alexapure 96%
  • Flouride: Alexapure can filter flouride by default but Berkey requires another filter attachment

How long the filter lasts

Black Berkeys are good for 3,000 gallons, and Alexapure Filters are good for 5,000 gallons.

Replacement filter cost

Alexapure filters and Berkey filters cost almost the same – though Berkey filters are generally a bit more expensive. However, you should remember that Berkey requires an extra filter for fluoride which Alexapure does not.

Cost

Alexapure Pro Filtration systems are about 25% cheaper than Berkey filters. Considering that both filters are the same size and the Berkey requires an additional filter, it may be more economical to use an Alexapure rather than a Berkey.

Alexapure vs Propur

Another competitor to Alexapure in the gravity filter market is Propur. These are also very similar filters but they have slight differences.

Filter

Alexapure and Propur both have carbon filters with a silver-infused ceramic outside shell. The Propur filter is GAC, or granulated activated carbon, and Alexapure’s filter is a carbon block.

GAC filters contain loose granules of carbon, whereas carbon block filters contain very finely grinding carbon particles which are then compressed into a brick.

Both start out with ground up particles of carbon.

In GAC filters, the carbon is left in a loose granular form.

Carbon block filters are made by further grinding and compressing the carbon into a solid block.

As you can imagine, the tightly packed carbon particles in the block filter will filter water more effectively, but it’ll be slower and will need to be replaced a little more often than GAC filters.

Contaminant Reduction

  • Lead: Alexapure 96%, Propur 100%
  • Radioactivity (Gross Alpha):Alexapure 96%, Propur 81
  • Radioactivity (Gross Beta) -Alexapure 97%, Propur 84%

Filter Lifespan

Propur filters must be replaced every year – Alexapure filters can last up to 5 years depending on how heavily you used them.

Also, Propur filters are more expensive – you’ll get a pair for $140 while an Alexapure filter is $100 or so. However you should remember that you may need to get more than one filter in the Alexapure to speed up the process.

Other differences

The Alexapure is cheaper than the Propur filter, but it should be noted that the Propure filter can hold half a gallon of water more than the Alexapure can.

Conclusion

If you’re looking to drink filtered water and don’t want to depend on electricity, or if you’re a prepper and you want to be able to have clean water for yourself and your family in the event of a SHTF event, the Alexapure Filter is a good choice to have around.

It won’t take up too much space on your kitchen counter and it will provide enough drinking water and fast enough for a family of 4 to 5 people very comfortably.

It also does not cost too much, though there is a recurring cost with the filters. Preppers should take note of this and pick up a stockpile of filters, too!

Westinghouse Water Filtration System Review

Westinghouse Water Filtration System
Are you sick and tired of buying bottled drinking water from stores?

Lugging all that water home from the supermarket week after week can get quite annoying, isn’t it? And not to mention the hundreds of empty plastic bottles that follow.

What’s more, the cost of buying bottled water can quickly add up.

So, the question is, what can you do?

Well, one of the best ways to get clean, filtered water that is at times better than bottled water is using refrigerator water filters. These small filters can be installed right into your fridge and rid your drinking water of contaminants such as parasites, heavy metals and more.

One of the best refrigerator filters on the market is the Westinghouse Purersource2.

The Puresource2 is a versatile replacement filter that can be used with refrigerators by several manufacturers including GE, Kenmore, Whirlpool, Frigidaire and more.

Let’s take a closer look at the filtration system itself and the features that make it so awesome.

What is it?

No products found.
No products found.

The Puresource2 is a replacement filtration unit for your refrigerator. It is a compact unit that can be installed without the need of any special tools in your existing fridge in about 5 minutes.

The filtration system is sturdy and has a rated filtration capacity of 400 gallons (1514 Liters). It is a chemical and mechanical filtration unit that can operate under high pressures (about 100 psi).

Let’s take a closer look at some of the features that make the Puresource2 such a compelling buy.

1. Excellent efficiency

The most important feature of any filtration system is its effectiveness. The Puresource2 Westinghouse water filtration system can eliminate not only small particulate contaminants from your drinking water but also some chemical impurities. The filter can remove disease-causing bacteria, protozoa and other microbes with up to 99.999% efficiency.

The filtration system can also remove chemical contaminants such as herbicides and pesticides that are common in tap water.

When it comes to heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and chemicals such as atrazine and toxaphene, the filter can significantly reduce the levels of these contaminants.

If your water has a typical smell or taste, you are in luck as the Puresource2 can get rid of it as well. It is a NSF certified unit that speaks volumes about its quality.

Overall, the unit is a high-efficiency system that can handle your tap water like a pro no matter where you live in the country!

2. Durability

Westinghouse water filtration systems are known for their durability and solidly built. The Puresource2 lives up to the name as well. The unit is very well designed and is leak-proof.

You will not have any issues when it comes to durability of the unit. Also, it can withstand a water pressure of up to a 100 psi, so you don’t have to worry about the high pressure from your source as well.

One more thing about the filtration unit that is enticing is the fact that it has a lifespan of 400 gallons. That is a lot of water! In fact, that is water worth about 3200 16-ounce water bottles! Imagine how much money you can save with this filtration unit.

3. Can be used in different models

One feature that I love about this filtration unit is the fact that it can be used without a problem in many brands as long as they have a front-loading cassette type filtration system.

Officially, this filtration unit can be used in fridges manufactured by Westinghouse, Kenmore, GE, Frigidaire, Whirlpool, KitchenAid and more.

However, you should check the owner’s manual of your appliance to make sure that the Puresource2 is suitable for you.

4. Easy to install

Many people are afraid of changing the filtration unit on their refrigerator as they think it will be too much of a hassle.

However, the unique mechanism of the Puresource2 enables you to change the filter in 5 minutes flat!

You will not even need any equipment as well, not even a screwdriver to get this done.

You can easily replace the filter in a few easy steps.

  • The first step to replacing the water filter in your refrigerator is turning off the water supply. You can quickly locate the water supply and turn it off by twisting the lever appropriately.
  • The second step is to locate the water filtration assembly in your fridge. Although the location of the filtration assembly will vary with brand and model of your appliance, it is not that difficult to locate. Most common location of this assembly is top right corner inside your fridge. The location is marked for easy spotting and quick replacement.
  • The third step is to push the release button and remove the existing water filter. The current water filter should pop right out with the push of the release button. If it does not, you take it out by pulling it gently.
  • The next step is to take the new water filter system and to remove the protective caps at the ends of the water inlet and outlet pipes.
  • Now, just insert the filtration unit in the slot and push gently until you hear a “click.” That’s it. Pat yourself on the back, you have just installed a brand-new filter in your fridge!

If you prefer a visual demonstration, here is a great video demonstrating the whole process.

5. Cost

Let’s face it; cost is a significant factor in making any purchase decision. We all want products that are excellent and yet affordable.

Although it can be difficult to find both these qualities in a single product, the PureSource2 Westinghouse water filtration system is an exception. It is a great product that is surprisingly affordable.

What is in the box?

  • One Puresource2 filtration system
  • An installation guide
  • Product specification sheet
[thrive_text_block color=”blue” headline=””]

Pros of the PureSource2

  • The small and compact unit has a solid build quality. It will not leak even under high water pressures.
  • It can filter 99.999% bacteria, protozoa, and other disease-causing organisms
  • It can also reduce the levels of chemical contaminants including lead, pesticides and pharmaceutical compounds
  • Surprisingly affordable
  • It has a lifespan of 400 gallons
  • Can be used with multiple brands
[/thrive_text_block] [thrive_text_block color=”blue” headline=””]

Cons of the PureSource2

The Puresource2 is an excellent water filtration unit for your refrigerator, but it does have a couple of issues that need to be pointed out.

  • Although the system is advertised to be compatible with a vast majority of brands, you will get best results if you have a Westinghouse or a Frigidaire appliance. The fit is much netter with these brands compared to some other brands including GE.
  • If you are not careful, the filtration system can leak, especially if you don’t pay attention while pushing it all in. However, if you are a bit careful, this is an issue that is easily avoidable.
[/thrive_text_block]

Final Verdict

The Puresource2 is a great refrigerator filtration system that is efficient and affordable at the same time. It can be used with some brand, which is a huge advantage.

You can find great deals on the Puresource2 on Amazon as well.

Trust me; this will be the best investment you made since you bought your fridge!

3M Home Water Filtration Review

3M Home Water Filtration
Most people have access to water in their homes in some way, but many of those people do not think to filter their water as it comes into the home.

While it’s true that there are some filtration options that can be attached to the faucet or pitchers that perform filtration, but these options are not as efficient as having your own water filtration system building into your home’s plumbing. One of the best water filtration systems on the market that you can buy is 3M Home Water Filtration.

Performance to Expect

There are many household water filtration systems out there, and not all of them provide just one stage of filtration like this model does.

Even though this 3M Home Water Filtration System only uses one step for filtration, it is able to achieve the task of filtering out various particles down to 5 microns in size.

These particles are so small that they cannot be seen by the naked eye. Therefore, this model is able to clean almost all of the contaminants found in water that passes through it.

If you live in an area where water can be easily contaminated or where the water filtration system for the local municipality might not be quite up to standards, you will find your home benefits from this type of water cleaning.

At the same time, you might find yourself rotating through many filters if the water coming into the house has a lot of heavy sediment because this filter is not meant to handle such demanding tasks.

Installation Information

You might not even think about installing one of these water filtration systems in your home initially.

In some cases, only modern homes are built with them in place, so you might have to go about updating your home to have this feature present.

While it looks like an oxygen tank that might attach to a water system, it packs quite the punch when it comes to cleaning water.

3M Aqua-Pure 5621104 Whole House Sanitary Quick Change Water Filter System AP904, Reduces Sediment, Chlorine Taste and Odor, and Scale, blue

Most water comes that comes into your home comes with certain trace elements and other dangerous things. One of these things is lead. Therefore, adding a water filtration system into your home will be able to prevent these trace amounts of potentially deadly substances from making their way into your home’s water and then into your body.

Installing one of these pieces into your home’s water system does not have to be difficult. Anyone with even a little knowledge about plumbing can put one of these filtration systems in place without having to call a professional.

However, if you do not know one end of a wrench from the other end, though, you might be better off contacting a professional.

It is important to note that this filtration system will not break down easily, either. Stainless steel construction has been worked into this filter’s head, and it should last for a lifetime, so long as it is treated with the proper care.

The manufacturer offers a 25 year limited warranty, which is proof of how confident they are in the head’s construction and capability.

Pros and Cons

This filter will wash out so many, different contaminants that could make water taste odd, be cloudy in color, or have strange smells. In some cases, this water filtration system is also able to remove staining elements like iron from the water, too.

If you use this water filtration system, you will find your water has a better, crisper, cleaner taste, and it looks practically crystal clear. Any particles that are as small as 5 microns will be filtered out of the water, so everything from chlorine to sulfur will be removed.

You are likely to also experience a change in your showers and baths once this water filtration system is in place. No longer will you spend extra time scrubbing soap from your hair and skin as the water will not be hard any longer.

At the same time, the shower and tub rinse clean of residue, and there are not any additional additives that might stick to your skin. If you have skin concerns, you might find that showers and baths are easier on your skin once this water filtration system is put into place.

You might have heard that some people have stated that they find water filtration systems to be too expensive of an upgrade. However, it is important to note that this water filtration system will last through 100,000 gallons of water, which no family is likely to go through in a single year.

However, letting the filter go for years on end without being serviced is not the best of ideas. It can become clogged, which will end up causing costly repairs. Therefore, the unit should be serviced at least once a year, even if that 100,000 gallon mark is nowhere near being exceeded.

There is another point to contend with when purchasing one of these water filtration systems. Consider how much money is spent in your home throughout a year on bottled water.

Having a water filtration system in your home will mean replacing all of those bottled waters with water from the tap. This feature alone will save you hundreds of dollars a year.

There is one, final factor to consider with installing a water filtration system. Appliances and pipes throughout your house that make use of a water connection will see an extended life.

These water features will not experience clogging or wear and tear from the additives and trace materials that will be taken out of the water. Sediment will not have the chance to form in the bottoms of pipes, which also makes the water safer to use in the long run.

[thrive_text_block color=”blue” headline=””]

Pros Review

  • Only needs to be replaced once every 100,000 gallons of water used.
  • Reduces the costs of purchasing bottled water and water pitcher filters.
  • Removes particles down to as small as five microns from water.
  • Experience fewer water stains on clothes, sinks, and more.
  • Reduce strange smells and metallic tastes, making water safer to consume.
[/thrive_text_block] [thrive_text_block color=”blue” headline=””]

Cons Review

  • Replacing the filter on a yearly basis can add up to costs that you might not want.
  • Having the unit installed by a professional and then serviced for the sake of preventing clogs an also add up in cost.

sawyer mini water filtration system

Whether you are a backpacking enthusiast or love going on hunting or fishing trips, you know how important clean water is. Sure, there are many so-called portable water filtration systems out there but let’s face it- they all have their problems.

Most of them are too bulky, heavy and cumbersome to lug around in the woods. Besides, most of these systems have a huge problem of clogging up, and so, they often fail when you need them the most. Well, Sawyer seems to have found a perfect solution to these problems with the new Sawyer Mini.

It is a pump-type filtration system that is one of the lightest, fastest and most efficient on the market.

The Sawyer Mini has been quite popular amongst the hiker and backpacker community for quite some time now. If you were wondering whether it is worth your time and money, we have you covered.

What follows is a detailed, unbiased and an honest review of the Sawyer mini water filtration system. We put the system to test so you can make an informed choice. So, let’s begin.

What is it?

The Sawyer Mini is a portable water filtration unit that can be used in some ways. At its heart, the Sawyer Mini is a small tube that weighs a mere 2 ounce that contains a filtration mechanism.

The filtration device is designed to prevent any clogging even after months of usage. The unit can filter bacteria, protozoa and other microbes from fresh water with ease.

However, it is not able to get rid of any chemicals present in the water.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the features that make the Mini such a compelling buy.

High efficiency

One of the biggest problems with small and portable filters is efficiency. They are just not effective in filtering out all the microbes.

However, the Sawyer Mini has a different story to tell. The Hollow Fiber filter mechanism used in the Mini is rated 0.1-micron absolute, which is the highest rating possible for a filter membrane.

In simpler terms, the Mini can filter out anything that is larger than 0.1 microns with an efficiency of 99.99999%!

The Hollow Fiber technology allows the filtration system to be extremely light-weight as well. Weighing in at just about 2 ounces (59 grams), it is arguably the lightest unit on the market.

You can hold it in the palm of your hand.

Durability

Sawyer has done a remarkable job in designing the Mini.

According to the company, the unit can filter up to 100,000 gallons of water!

That is just insane capacity for such a tiny device. According to the company, if you clean the unit and maintain it properly, it can go even longer!

Another advantage of the system is that due to the unique Hollow Fiber design, the system is virtually clog-free.

There are several portable filtration systems out there that get clogged within the first few uses. Once a filtration system is clogged, you run the risk of breaching the filter membrane and contaminating the filtered water.

The genius of the Mini lies in the fact that as it is rarely clogged, the filtration system can maintain its integrity and you get safe, clean drinking water every single time.

Versatility

Versatility is what makes the Mini a great filtration system. It can be used in many ways, and you get filtered water instantly. You can use the Sawyer Mini in the following manner.

Attach to the squeeze pouch

  • Attach to the squeeze pouch

The Mini can be connected to the 16-ounce squeeze pouch that comes in the kit. Just fill the squeeze pouch with water and connect the Mini on the top and squeeze clean, filtered water directly into your mouth.

It is that simple.

Use it as a personal straw

  • Use it as a personal straw

The Sawyer Mini can be used as a personal straw to drink directly from the source.

Alternatively, you can fill a container with water and use the Mini as a straw to drink from it instantly.

Screw it right on the bottle

  • Screw it right on the bottle

You can also screw the Mini directly on top of most mineral water bottles and soft drink bottles. Just fill the bottle with the water you wish to filter, attach the Mini on the top, and you are good to go!

You can even use the Mini to drink from a questionable water bottle if you are overseas.

Use it in hydration packs

  • Use it in hydration packs

In-line hydration packs are great, and now, you can attach the Mini directly to them to have a continuous hands-free hydration.

Easy to clean

The robust Hollow Tube filtration system can be cleaned with high-pressure clean water and can be used over and over without any breach in the integrity.

Cleaning the Mini is a breeze as well. The kit contains a plunger the can be used to flush the Mini with clean, filtered water to get rid of any accumulated gunk.

Just attach the plunger that is filled with clean water to the Mini opposite to the flow arrow and force the water through.

Doing it a couple of times will clean the Mini completely and you can use it again.

Cost

The Mini is easily one of the best portable filtration units on the market but what about the cost?

Well, you will be surprised to know that the insanely useful Sawyer Mini is also insanely affordable!

It will surely be one of the best investments you made on your outdoor gear.

What is in the box?

  • One Sawyer Mini filtration unit
  • One 16-ounce squeeze pouch
  • One 7-inch drinking straw
  • One cleaning plunger

Pros of the Sawyer Mini

  • Lightweight (2 ounces), small (1 inch X 5 inch) and extremely portable
  • 0.1-micron absolute rating
  • Can filter 99.99999% of bacteria, protozoa, and other microbes
  • Can be used in various ways including as a straw and in-like hydration packs
  • Surprisingly affordable
  • Incredibly easy to clean and has a lifespan of 100,000 gallons or more
  • Available in multiple colors, which is a plus as well

Cons of the Sawyer Mini

Although the Mini has many advantages, it does have some minor issues as well. Although none of these are deal breakers by any stretch of the imagination, they can be a bit bothersome for a few people.

  • You can’t let the unit freeze. The filtration membrane can get damaged if the unit is frozen and hence, use it with caution if you are hiking in extreme winters
  • You must be careful in screwing the Mini to the Squeeze pouch or on a bottle top. If the seal is not tight, you may end up contaminating your filtered water
  • You need to clean this unit often. Although it is incredibly easy to clean, you can’t ignore cleaning the Mini between your hikes

Final verdict

The Sawyer Mini is one of the best portable filtration systems on the market. It is a must have gear for any backpacker, hiker, hunter or well, almost anyone.

It combines portability with efficiency in a surprisingly affordable package.

You can find great deals on the Sawyer Mini Water Filtration system on Amazon as well.

The filtration system also removes iron thus preventing your home appliances from rusting. These benefits are all great, therefore, it is worth it.

Are Carbon Water Filters Worth It?

Carbon rely on finely processed charcoal. The microscopic carbon particles provide a surface area that offers incredible powers of absorption. For that reason, please note they act as chemical remover.

Therefore, the carbon water filters are worth it. They remove contaminants rendering it safe for you to drink.

Do Whole House Water Filters Affect Water Pressure?

Yes, a whole filtration system handles incoming contaminants to give healthier water in every faucet in your house. As a result, the entire home system slows down the flow.

The water pressure to your appliances, shower and water sinks as well as other faucets decrease. Therefore, filtered water flows at a slower rate unlike unfiltered water since the filtration media alters the rate at which water flows.

Why do you need a carbon water filter?

Most people are not aware that it does not o matters not only the water we drink but also the one we use to clean our clothes. Some water depending on the source, will contain chemicals that vaporize when showering, which may affect your health. Using a whole house water filter will promote healthy skin and hair while ensuring clean water for your household, plants, and pets.

Please note that whole house filter for water works in the entire place without installing an independent filtration system at each point of use, it offers a lot of convenience for your household requirements.

Besides, it also removes substances such as chloramines and chlorine used by water treatment companies. Contaminants including lead, mercury, and other dissolved elements thus acting as a water softener.

You will find it useful in disinfecting and filtering depending on the sources such as wells that have not gone through treatment by the local companies.

Other things to consider

Pipe Size

In most instances, the pipe feeding most households with water is ¾ or 1” diameter. The filter will require to be of the same size or as the mains pipe or lager since a smaller pipe would lead to clogging. Always, ensure you go for the right water filtration system since it will reduce the issues arising with the water pressure.

Type of Filter

Having tested the water, you will need to choose a type of filter that will remove specific substances found in your water. Carbon filtration system is ideal for treating water with chlorine.

Performance and use

You will amicably agree that the more the filter stages, the better a filtration system is since there are several layers to wipe out any impurities. Usually, most designs are three staged through a two-stage filtration system that may suffice in areas with less contaminated water.

Typically, they will cost you less. However, you will also want to consider the system’s entire performance in terms of removing impurities and softening and descaling it.

Type of Water

Testing it in your house to find out products in it before installing a filtration system is vital. It will allow you to choose a filter that suits your purpose. At times, you will require an aggressive system in the removal of chloramines. Therefore, you will want to go for a filtration system that is effective in reducing chloramines levels.

Does It Meet the Standards Of NSF?

If you buy a certified filter by the NSF (National sanitation foundation), then it is good enough for the purpose. Additionally, you can confirm it contains the water quality association (WAQ) seal. rights reserved, WAQ will always have a quality seal on the products. The certifications will imply the filters have proven to be of quality after being taken through rigorous testing by the most reputable organizations in the US.

Nonetheless, it doesn’t mean that any filter without the seal from the NSF is of poor quality. All rights reserved, certification comes along with high costs, which might not be affordable for small enterprises.

Some companies opt to do independent testing at their lab in comparison to the NSF standards. If they do it in trustworthy labs, the certification can as well be meaningful. All rights reserved, NSF remains the most authentic way of determining quality products.

How Long is the Filter Life?

Lifespan is another vital factor considers while selecting a filtration system would be the lifespan and capacity. A unit with huge capacity can last up to a decade for regular use while others can last for just one year. Installation of a whole house filtration system is an engaging and time-consuming task.

However, the replacement of the carbon filter is less engaging than the installation although not a walk in the park. It takes techniques that may require you to engage a professional at times.

The process will involve turning the water on and off frequently, which would be inconveniencing to the family at times. As a result, you would require a cartridge that will take you through several months conveniently.

Hence, it would be advisable to go for a system that lasts at least 6 months. Depending on their quality and the rate at which you use it, a filter can serve you for years or a decade. It would be recommendable to go for such convenience.

Final thoughts

Whole house water filtration systems are one of the most popular filtering solutions applicable throughout the US. The systems is popular since it produce high-quality drinking water. The best whole house water carbon filtration system is also environment friendly, unlike other filtration systems.

Whole house water filter is worth it whenever you are looking for a filtration system that can remove sediments, micro-organisms, heavy metals, rust, and chemicals from your water. It not only help to protect our health but also increase the lifespan of your household appliances. Therefore, it is worth every coin you spend on it.

Even though the tap in the US cities is treated, making it safe for direct consumption will require a basic whole house filtration. It will further remove any rust, sediments, and chemicals such as chlorine or chloramines to get high-quality water. The water will be odorless and clear. In any case, the filtration systems are affordable, and they won’t possibly hurt.

How iron gets into your well water

Typically, iron gets into your water through seeping from the earth as it is the most abundant mineral in the earth’s crust. Depending on the depth and geological location, the levels of iron can be different, but no matter how well you maintain your well, there is still a significant amount of iron in your water.

Besides, if the pipes and casings are made of iron, the iron oxide from the corroded pipes can get into the water. Prolonged exposure to oxygen and water causes iron to oxidize into rust.

The corroded water fixtures leave brown flecks in your water and orange stains on your tubs. You can remedy this situation by replacing the plumbing and fixtures on your well.

Effects of iron on well water

Iron is an essential mineral that a human needs in their diet, and it is highly unlikely you’ll consume toxic amounts in your drinking water. Many people will want to get rid of iron since it has adverse effects on their lives.

Here are some of the reasons why you might need to get rid of iron.

Stains and slime on appliances

You’re probably familiar with the frustrating repercussions of iron in a well . The stains it leaves behind on your dishes, laundry, bathtubs, and toilet bowl.

Any metallic appliance plumbing in your well becomes discolored when exposed to water rich in iron. These stain are hard to clean, no matter how hard you try and could cost you energy and time.

Clogged pipes and drainage

Rust particles and fragments can be stuck as the water travel down your pipes. If they sit stagnant for extended periods, the iron accumulates in your pipes and clogs the system. This can lead to expensive repairs on your washing machines and other appliances.

Bacterial iron can cause the most severe clogging issues It leaves behind thick brown slime, which collects in pipes and causes erratic water pressure giving the pathogenic bacteria a place to thrive.

Foul odor and taste

Iron in water can make even the best foods and beverages take an extraordinary metallic taste. It can cause water impossible to drink for some people, thanks to its brown-orange or yellow coloration.

Even when it is clear, it will have a sharp and unpleasant taste and odor.

Discoloration on hair and skin

When your hair absorbs iron, it can develop a dark discoloration. If your hair is light-colored, it turns orange while darker hair takes on some red highlights. Your hair can also become brittle and dry, not to mention the awful metallic odor it leaves on your hair.

Dissolved minerals such as iron can cause excessive scum residue on your skin when you take a shower. The residue on your skin clogs the pores and causes you issues with acne and eczema.

Health risk for some

Individuals with hemochromatosis should not consume high levels of iron. This is a hereditary condition that causes the body to absorb too much iron without a way of getting rid of it.

The excess iron poisons the body organs leading to cancer, weight loss, irregular heartbeat, and cirrhosis of the liver.

Forms of iron common in well water

There are three forms of iron in private wells. These are ferrous, ferric and bacterial iron.

Ferrous iron

This is the water-soluble iron that you can’t see, and that’s why it’s also called clear water iron. This water comes out of the faucet while clear and only turns red after getting exposed to air.

You can’t filter out this kind of iron in that form. However, you can remove it through an oxidation process that turns it into sediments, which are then filtered out.

How to remove ferrous iron

As we had earlier stated, ferrous iron is soluble and invisible. One of the ways of removing this kind iron is using a water softener. While water softeners are primarily useful in removing hardness in water, they can also remove soluble iron from your well.

This happens in an ion exchange process. Since sodium ions in the resin tank carry a negative charge, they attract the positively charged cations in the iron water. The ferrous ion sticks on the resin beads, while sodium ions are removed from the system as waste.

You need sediment prefilter if it also contains ferrous iron. If you’re using a water softener for treatment, ensure you regularly flush the system to avoid the resin bed from clogging with rust.

Another good way of getting rid of ferrous iron is to convert it into solid particles that a filter can remove. These kinds of filter systems are called oxidizing filters. You can opt to use any of the following media.

Removing ferrous iron with manganese greensand

This is a potent oxidizer. When ferrous iron and manganese are exposed to the oxidizing agent, and they turn into solid. The resulting ferric iron is then flushed out of the system.

Manganese greensand can treat water with up to 15 ppm of iron. Remember that just like water softeners, these iron filters need regular backwashing to clean out any iron precipitate on the media bed.

Backwashing ensures that no bacteria grows inside the system and so it’s an essential process for safe water. Lack of sufficient backwashing might eventually cause your good water filter systems to fail.

Removing ferrous iron with KDF

KDF (Kinetic Degradation Fluxion) is a system that uses a chemical process to remove chlorine andiron from water supplies. It also gets rid of heavy metals like mercury and lead as it passes through the filters. The media in KDF filters converts ferrous iron into ferric iron oxide, making it easy to filter out.

Such a filtering system works best in low water volumes and low pressure because it requires extended periods for the oxidation process to complete. This process is ideal for ferrous iron concentrations of 10 ppm or more.

Removing ferrous iron with Birm

This is another good option that you can use as an oxidizing media to remove clear water iron from well water. While manganese greensand uses chemicals in the oxidation process, birm does not require a chemical oxidizing agent to remove ferrous iron.

If you have water with high levels of pH, birm will make an excellent oxidation option. Systems that use birm combine it with calcite to raise the pH, enabling the birm to oxidize the ferrous iron and remove it from the water.

Ferric iron

This is the iron that gives your water an orange-brown coloration often in oxygen-rich water sources. Ferric iron is insoluble and viscous, which causes clogging in your plumbing and home appliances. It is easy to get rid of this iron mechanically using a regular filter.

Removing ferric iron from well water

Using sediment filters is ideal for homeowners with water infested by ferric iron. The sediment filters out dirt, particles, and any debris from entering your house pipes.

It’s also good to ensure that your sediment filter has the smallest available micro rating to filter out fine particles adequately. Sediment filters made of string-wound natural cotton are excellent in removing iron in your supply.

Before choosing this option, it’s good to note that the filter will only work with ferric and not ferrous iron. That’s why you need to be sure about the condition of your water.

Using sediment filter for water with ferrous iron means that you end up with stained toilet bowls, stained laundry, and ugly looking dishes.

Bacterial iron

Among the most challenging forms of iron to remove in well water is bacterial iron is kind of iron forms when bacteria bonds with iron forming a bright red sludge that resembles tomato paste.

While iron can cause damage to your water system and appliances, there are no serious effects of having it in your water unless you consume water infected by iron bacteria. Iron bacteria are microscopic organisms that feed of iron.

When these bacteria leave behind iron waste, a gross slime that sticks on pipes, it creates an active environment for other harmful bacteria to thrive and they can cause infections in human beings.

You will find this in abandoned wells or wells that lack proper maintenance. When bacteria iron forms inside of pipes, it can clog your well pump, block your plumbing fixtures, and leave slimy red residue in your toilet bowl.

Bacteria iron can ruin your softening system, sediment prefilters, and other water treatment appliances. While the iron is not harmful in itself, it provides an excellent ground for harmful pathogens to grow and reproduce.

Removing bacterial iron from iron water

You can only identify iron bacteria by microscopic analysis. To remove the slimy invasive pollutant in water contaminated with bacterial iron, you can opt to use shock chlorination as a treatment option.

This process involves introducing a high chlorine concentration to the well water to disinfect the water and the whole filter system. Getting rid of this iron is labor-intensive and time consuming.

You must ensure you expose the entire well, the well pump, and all the plumbing system to the shock chlorination. The process eradicates the bacteria on the iron and makes it easy to remove the iron using a softener, sediment filter, or oxidizer.

Shock chlorination might not resolve this bacterial infestation permanently, so you need to do this regularly, like twice in a year. If repeated treatment doesn’t solve the problem, it would be advisable to install a continuous application system to automatically inject low amounts of chlorine into the well.

You also need to install a permanent filtration if you install a continuous chlorination system to remove the iron particles.

Why you might need a whole house water filter

The type of filter you choose depends solely on the quality of your water and the specific problem you want to solve. Getting rid of chemicals, minerals, or gases might need different processes and technologies.

Before you pick on any of the many whole house water filter models available in the market, you need to test and know the cause of the problem in your well water and if it contains hardness minerals and other contaminants.

The presence of manganese and iron means you need to invest in a whole house water filter. If you want to remove calcium and magnesium to soften the water, a whole house water filter with a water softener is ideal.

Further, some models include a UV filtration for processing drinking water, but this should depend on your preferences and budget.

How does a whole house water filter work?

Whole house water systems use different mediums to filter out contaminants. A basic whole house water filter comprises several separate filters, and all are meant to filter out sediment or iron.

When water enters the filtration system, it goes through a sediment prefilter that removes larger particles like sand, debris, and silt from the water. This filter also helps to keep the next filter in good condition and ensures it lasts long without needing frequent replacement.

It then passes through an activated carbon filter which removes a lot of contaminants thanks to its big porous surface. The surface attracts the contaminants and traps them in a process called adsorption.

Here, it filters any left sediment along with foul smells and tastes. When it leaves the carbon filter, it goes through copper-zinc and mineral filter. This filter is an essential part of this process since it removes heavy metals present, any bacteria, and other microorganisms.

Some models of whole house water filters include a water softener or descaler system which uses an ion exchange system.water enters the softening system, it passes through a resin bed that contains sodium ions where ion exchange takes place.

If your water contains calcium and magnesium ions, these ions replace the ions in sodium, and this makes the water soft. Some whole house water filters might have a post-filter option. The post-filters stop even the smallest particles from reaching your pipes.

Though less frequent, a UV filter is an essential component which kills any remaining bacteria, viruses, or micro organism that by passed the other filters. Some systems could include air injection functionality that helps convert the soluble iron to rust, which then makes it easy to filter out the rust.

Using air injection is not a guaranteed way of filtering sediments since not all ferrous converts to rust, so you might still find clogging in your appliances after all. If you want to get rid of iron, it’s crucial to have an accurate knowledge of what kinds of iron is present in your well.

What to consider when buying the best iron filter for well water

You might not be able to control iron from seeping into your water, but you can control it from getting into your house. The most effective way to remove iron from well is by using a filter system.

No single filter is fit for every homeowner. What worked for your neighbor might not work for you. It’s critical to know which features you need before you buy the best iron filter.

You need to pick a filter with features that work for you. If you have moved to a new home, your filter or water softener might fail to work with your new water supply.

So if you’re looking for the best iron filter, there are factors to consider before you make a purchase. Here are some of them.

Water composition

Before choosing the best well water filter, a water analysis is vital to know what is precisely is in it. For instance, apart from having iron, some well waters are naturally acidic. In such a case, you have to treat it for acidity before removing iron.

This is because most iron filters cannot remove iron in the acidic state. Additionally, wells located near industrial sites, or close to a heavily agricultural area where people use chemicals, your water might contain contaminants.

A general mineral testing is required to determine the levels of pollutants that might need removing, which will determine the kind of filter you will need to get rid of bad taste and odor

Testing for iron in well water Iron in itself is part of a good, healthy diet, and the human body requires it to produce red blood cells. EPA considers iron as a secondary drinking water contaminant.

Secondary contaminants are contaminants that are not necessarily dangerous to consume but have aesthetic or cosmetic effects like causing stains, foul tastes, etc.

However, high levels of iron in the body can cause toxicity if your body doesn’t eliminate it. You might want to test for the iron levels in your well. So it’s good to understand what levels are acceptable.

If your test shows that it contains unacceptable contaminants, you can look for alternative water supplies. You can also opt to treat your water by removing the contaminants. Removing iron from the well water is contingent on understanding what form of iron is present.

Iron test strips can also reveal the parts per million of iron in your well water. Water with more than 0.3 p.p.m (parts per million) of iron will require you to invest in a filter for well since it will have adverse effects on your clothes, appliances, dishes, and all.

Micron capacity

The micron filtration capacity tells you the smallest particles a filter can remove. The best whole house filters use a series of micron filters with different sizes to ensure your pipes are free from all sediment.

Typically, you need a 1-micron filter for bacteria and parasites, while the 5-micron filter can effectively remove all sand and rust. You might consider a model with a UV sterilization functionality to ensure your water is free from all microorganisms.

Virtually all filtration systems decrease the water pressure as it moves through the system. It is crucial to consider the pressure from your water supply and that on your filtration system.

The pressure in both will ensure decent water pressure in your kitchen and bathroom pipes.

Flow rate

Most of the water filtration systems needs a specific minimum flow rate to operate optimally. You need to check the flow rate of your water supply since it must be consistent with the filter flow rate.

For instance, if your water filtration requires 10 gallons per minute, the water supply must supply the 10 gallons for a smooth process. Ensure that your supply meets the flow rate of your water filter so that there is enough force to move the water through the media bed, lift the media, and allow self-cleaning.

Conclusion

You need to invest in an iron filter to remove iron and other contaminants from your well water. High levels of iron can cause health risks for some individuals.

Similarly, high concentrations of manganese in drinking water could intoxicate the nervous system and, therefore, not safe for pregnant women and the elderly.

It’s important to have a laboratory test done on your water to determine the concentration of iron, manganese or hydrogen sulfide is in your well water.

Water with more than four ppm might need a whole house water softening system with an iron filter as well as a water softener to mitigate the problem.

Not every water softener system can remove iron from water. You need to check with the manufacturer’s specifications. Before buying a well water filter, ensure that your iron and manganese concentration in your water does not exceed the maximum removal capacity indicated in your iron filter.

Types of filters

If you are in the market for a water filter for your home, you must understand how the available units work before any purchase.

Brita has an array of water filtration units including faucet water filters, dispensers, and pitchers that work differently. ZeroWater on the other hand has a decent collection of water pitchers, dispensers, and tumblers thatyou can use to filter your drinking water.

Although the installation and operating mechanisms may be different for the models available from these producers, the filtration technique is almost similar in all.

In each of the filters from ZeroWater and Brita, you will find activated carbon as a component. This element helps remove contaminants that alter the taste and smell of your water by chemically bonding with the dissolved solids and other impurities.

Zero Water however, does not rely on this technique only. Most if not all their water pitcher and tumbler filters have the 5-stage filtration system. Ion exchange technology is part of the five stages. Cleaner and better tasting water is what you get when you opt to buy any of the Zero Water products.

If you are keen on the tech used in the different units from Brita or ZeroWater, then it is important for us to note that; currently, Brita uses the steam filter technology. Filtration is made safer, faster, and the quality of the filtered water you get is also the best.

The choice of unit to go with is dependent on many factors. For starters, you have to determine the purpose of the unit you want to acquire. This will help you pick between faucet, water pitcher, bottle filtration, or the portable on-the-go filters.

ZeroWater and Brita have different types of filters. Pitchers, bottles, and dispensers are the common filtration system that these companies have.

In this comparison, we will focus on these products with the filter pitcher as the primary focus and determine which company has the best models to serve you, your kin, and friends.

Filtration Quality

ZeroWater boasts of an intricate system that can remove 99.6% of all solid contaminants in your tap or groundwater. Dirt, grime, dissolved solids, and damaging chemicals are among the many impurities that are eliminated..

This in turn yields clean water that is good for human consumption. Every ZeroWater filter is certified by NSF as safe and effective. The 5-stage filtration system is the main feature that makes the various models from Zero Water unique.

Coarse filtration elements kick start the entire process. The first layer filters out fine sediments and particles. For the second stage, a foam distributor diffuses the water uniformly across the filter.

This also helps increase the lifespan of the filtered water as well as the efficiency of the Zero Water filter model you purchase.

Chlorine and other organic contaminants are then removed from the water by using activated carbon. Demineralization and removal of the ultra-fine particles is done in the 3rd and 4th stages.

The TDS meter reports are part of the package you receive; you can use this to confirm the quality of the filtered water. A TDS meter shows the concentration of dissolved solid particles in the water. The TDS meter report also helps you determine if the water filter you buy will be useful or not.

ZeroWater is a reputable brand and the filter pitcher units they produce are among the best in the market.

Brita is also a renowned company whose products are among the most sought after in the market. Filters from this company are top-tier and they also do a good job at eliminating most contaminants from water. All the water pitchers that this company makes, for instance, are made using BPA-free material.

Every water filter pitcher from this manufacturer is safe to use. You must change the filters after a specific period to maintain the quality of water you filter.

Most of the models they produce currently use the activated carbon and ion exchange filtration systems to purify your water.

They use coconuts as the source for their activated carbon. Organic impurities and minerals present in tap water are among the contaminants that every Brita water filter removes.

Various tests done on filter pitcher models from this manufacturer confirm that units improve the quality and taste of water.

Regarding filtration quality both brands have efficient products. Brita however, has received more recognition in this water filter business over Zero Water.

Water Filtering Speed

When buying a water filter, there are  many features that you must bear in mind. The duration it takes for you to get the amount of water you need is a factor that you must pay keen attention to.

Buying a slow water filter comes with challenges that will almost render the system useless. Consider the purpose of acquiring the unit and how much water you need in your household before you pick one.

Every filter requires a certain amount of time to remove all the impurities in the water. Of the two brands, Brita is the fastest.

Every Brita filter operates with a straightforward mechanism and this reduces the filtration time significantly. For Zero Water, the five stages of filtration increases the amount of time that the water is in contact with the various components.

It takes a longer time for Zero Water pitchers to filter water when compared to Brita systems. ZeroWater pitcher filters take averagely 110 seconds to filter a cup of water whereas a Brita pitcher takes roughly forty seconds to filter the same amount of water.

If you are after a filtration pitcher that will help you filter more water at a go then Brita is the answer. On this feature, Brita beats ZeroWater hands down.

Filter Lifespan

You must be aware of the duration that a given unit will serve you before you acquire it. Every pitcher filter must be replaced after a specified duration.

This is because the mechanisms that these filters employ to purify water entails capturing particles or drawing ions away from the water.

It is critical to know how much water you can filter with a specific pitcher, faucet or any other type of filter before a replacement is done.

This feature coupled with the initial amount of acquisition come together to inform the overall cost of getting a particular unit.

Both brands that we discuss here have good quality filter units. The materials used and the craft work hand in hand to guarantee the efficiency, as well as, aesthetic value of the unit you buy.

The standard Brita pitcher filter can filter a sum of 40 gallons before it needs replacement. The new longlast filter that they release into the market can filter up to one hundred and twenty gallons before you have to replace.

ZeroWater is able to filter a sum of fifteen gallons then it becomes ineffective. The amount of impurities present in the water you are filtering alters the lifespan of the filter. From the difference in filtered water, it is best to pick the 40 gallons option over the unit that filters only 15 gallons.

From the three features that we focus on above, you can tell which filter is best suited for filtering drinking water in your home.

These are not the only critical elements to lookout for but they are the fundamental elements that affect the normal functioning of any filter.

In the Zero Water vs Brita debate the German company has an upper hand in producing odorless drinking water with less contaminants.
